What a week! Getting off to a stormer this January with some unexpected hauls! After Kane‘s early hat rick, it looked a bit perilous as many gave him the armband and shot to 40 odd points after just one game. However after the 3 o’clocks ended, I was a much happier man. Big Peter Crouch delivered the goods, Tom Heaton nicks all the bonus points again and Sanchez does what he does best. Then something incredible happened in the late game, a brace from  a defender! Lovely stuff!! Saturday really was a joyous occasion.

THE GOOD

Have to start with the highest scorer of the week with a monstrous 21 points, Marcos Alonso. I may have said some harsh words about Marcy Marc in my preview, however I’m more than happy to eat those words and proclaim he is now the new Messi. Looks like Ake‘s arrival and talk of a few LWBs being linked with Chelsea has spurred the Spaniard to up his game. His usual solid play was complimented by some classy finishes, bagging 2 goals, a clean sheet and all the bonus points. Top Marcs! Tom Heaton delivered a late flurry of saves to keep his clean sheet and earn the maximum bonus points, bringing home 10 points! Heaton is the the only GSL player never to see a transfer, he’s been a constant source of points and fantasy jewel. I’m amazed more managers haven’t jumped aboard. Wrapping up the defence, Baines kept an unlikely clean sheet on his GSL debut. That’s a whopping 37 points from the defence, from 3 players!! Possibly the most my defence will ever get all season, and it’s when  play All Out Attack..

In the midfield Christian Erisken continued his fine form with yet another double figure haul. He took the sting out of Kane‘s haul and outscored the ever more popular Alli. Sanchez was another player to bring home double digit points, and possibly more importantly outscored Giroud, who more and more managers are turning to to free up funds, whilst maintaining Arsenal cover.

Upfront Zlatan grabbed a late equaliser to continue his rampant FPL form. That’s 35 points in 4 games the big Swede has brought home for GSL (make that 55 when he took the armband!). I had my doubts about Zlatan coming to the prem, but fair play to him he’s done the business and more. Last but certainly not least, Peter Crouch! I must admit I felt pretty dirty bringing him in. He’s been buried deep in fantasy obscurity for many a year and although his form is good, taking a punt on him was largely influenced by his reputation as a novelty footballer. Usually a bad idea for FPL, however he was key in Stoke’s first half blitz at Sunderland and came home with 11 points! What a guy! At the ripe old age of 35, the lanky bastard is still at it! Crouch for England!! He takes this weeks Goldenballs award.

Elsewhere, a certain Diego Costa lost his shit leading up to the Friday night bombshell that he’s been dropped from Chelsea’s squad! Who saw that coming?? Wether its just an injury, Chinese money or someone just looked at him wrong in the street, it was excellent news and even better timing. (Although I’m sure those who were on the ball probably went for Kane…)

THE BAD

Unsurprisingly this will be a rather short section. Capoue, Phillips and Siggy all returned minimal points, however with their fixtures I expected nothing less. So although they appear in this section, only one man truly deserves to be here. Sergio, Sergio, Sergio… For a man who commands so much of our precious FPL funds, he’s not allowed off days. He was a victim of City’s stubbornness and their inability to move the ball quick enough, instead favouring the extra pass. Pep’s record may be unrivalled, however his style just doesn’t match the players he has at his disposal. Barca and Bayern had the ability, but also the drive and determination to press and win the ball back. This City team look far too cavalier on and off the ball. Augero is always going to score points over a season, but with so many alternatives the nagging voice may get louder and louder. He’s got a few games yet, to prove why he is the most expensive fantasy asset going.

After a barnstorming start to January, I’m hoping for more of the same next week! Preview to follow!

Pray for Points
